New End

Hampstead, London

Located within the dense cluster of streets and alleys behind Hampstead High Street, this project involved structural alterations to the roof and upper floors of an 18th century house to create a raised platform with views out over central London.

The works involved the removal of the central valley of a M-shaped pitched roof, and infilling with a new structure incorporating roof lights and a large glazed opening in the gable wall. The mezzanine floor is accessed from the bedroom, reached via a ships ladder. Natural light washes down the gable wall, and is let down to the lower floor through glazed slots. Raising the sleeping area provides additional space below for a new dressing area and bathroom.

Materials include solid Douglas Fir floors and tops, and painted t+g boarding. The shower is lined with salvaged marble.
