The Lough Road Centre in Islington provides centre-based short breaks and outreach support for children and young people with severe disabilities. The aim of this project was to make the centre more welcoming, accessible and better tailored for children with complex health needs.

Alterations have been made to improve the usability of the communal rooms, by widening doors, installing adjustable worktops, creating a new reading space and improving storage and medical facilities. Existing carpets have been replaced with cushioned vinyl to improve infection control, and new lighting, colour and textures introduced to make the Centre feel more homely.

The dining room has been developed as a space that can support a number of uses including meetings and art therapy; it opens out to a new external space, with a shade canopy, seating and a ‘Hide-out’ corner for quiet play. New storage units with display boards in the bedrooms enable children to personalize their space.
