Frognal Close

Hampstead, London

This Grade-II listed, modern movement house is one of a group of six designed by Ernst Freud in 1937. The client’s brief was to change the configuration of the main living spaces to suit a family of today, whilst retaining the distinctive quality of the building. The house required extensive refurbishment and complete renewal of services.

The kitchen and living spaces have been opened up, and a new staircase inserted to connect with a studio workshop, formed by converting an existing basement garage. Original features, including the external canopy, balustrades and fireplace were either repaired or reconstructed in modern idiom. The brickwork was cleaned with a light acid and repointed, recreating an appropriate modern appearance.

New interventions included sliding-folding aluminium doors, oak-veneered internal panelling and a limestone fireplace. The original oak mosaic flooring was carefully repaired and re-finished.
